Sandy Bottom Park and Nature Trail

Location: Richmond, NY

This park is located 40 minutes south of Rochester, NY at the north end of Honeoye Lake. There is a beautiful view of the lake and surrounding hills with benches and picnic tables, two playgrounds, swimming beach, boat launch, fishing area, porta potty, and informational signs. Be sure to look for signs before swimming as this lake can have Harmful Algal Blooms making swimming unsafe.

There are several hiking trails. We started at the beach and made a loop with the purple trail to the blue trail, to the yellow trail, back to the purple trail.

  • Purple Martin Sunset Trail – A 0.4 mile one way gravel path from the beach to Main Street. This path is stroller friendly, but it is a bumpy ride.
  • Blue Heron Nature Walk Trail – A 0.25 mile boardwalk path connecting the purple trail to the yellow trail. There is an observation deck with benches. The boardwalk is narrow and slanted in places. At the end of the boardwalk at the junction with the yellow trail, there was no ramp connecting the boardwalk down to the grass and this drop-off is difficult to navigate with wheels.
  • Gold Finch Mill Creek Trail – A 0.25 mile grass path connecting to the purple, blue, and red trails. This trail is mostly flat but could be difficult to navigate with some strollers.
  • Red Hawk 3M Trail – A 1.5 mile loop around an agricultural field that is accessed via the yellow trail or a parking area on E. Lake Road. I did not hike this trail.
