Panama Rocks Scenic Park

Location: Panama, NY

This park is located in Chautauqua County – 2.5 hours southwest of Rochester, NY and 1.5 hours south of Buffalo. This is a beautiful natural area filled with huge rock formations, some as tall as 60 feet, surrounded by forest. The rocks were formed over 300 million years ago and there are caves, crevices, and narrow passageways you can explore. A one-mile trail loops around the rocks, but visitors are also allowed to climb and wander through the rocks off-trail. The lower trail is down among the rocks and the upper trail is above the rocks. Be very careful on the upper trail, as there are very steep drop-offs, cliffs, and holes. There are restrooms, swing set, picnic areas, and other fun things to do. There is an admission fee and waivers must be signed before starting the hike. There is also camping and glamping at this park.

Notes from the official website:

  • Pets are allowed on a leash. They must be friendly to strangers and we do not allow any pet on the upper trail (by the cliffs).
  • Wear footwear suitable for hiking – we strongly advise against wearing flip-flops, cowboy boots, or high heels. The trail is not stroller accessible nor wheelchair accessible; we recommend a backpack type carrier for small children.
  • No Rappelling On Holiday Weekends: Rappelling is allowed but not on holiday weekends or during festivals. Please do not damage native flora – no rappelling down moss covered cliffs, etc.
