Blue Cut Nature Center

Location: Lyons, NY

This beautiful hiking area is located 45 minutes east of Rochester, NY. We parked at the parking lot near the restrooms and picnic area then walked along the line of evergreen trees and past the field to the next pavilion and picnic area. According to the official website there are several trails in this nature area:

  • “The green marked Forestry Trail leads through the pine plantation.”
  • “The orange marked Wildlife Trail exhibits various habitats including a wetland, woods, field and mowed grass strips.”
  • “The blue marked Time Study Trail begins in a planted 20 year old pine forest, then climbs a drumlin formed 11,000 years ago by glaciers.”

We started with the super short side trail to a wetland view. We then entered the woods and walked along the path to the right that passes under the wooden archway. This appeared to be a fun trail for kids, though in the winter it did not look setup except for a “Music Station” – I wonder if they add more to it in the warmer months? There is a straight path through the pine plantation which is very beautiful and can be made into a small loop. These trails are flat and about 0.8 miles long. It may be stroller friendly, but I am not sure because there was snow in some places. I will report back once I visit in a warmer season.

We also did the larger loop to hike the Time Study Trail. This one had a pretty steep little hill with some steps in one part. I saw some deer here! This part of the trail is NOT stroller friendly. There is a firing range near the trail so please read all signage and stay on the path.

Leashed dogs are allowed.
