Butterfly Nature Trail at Macedon Canal Park

Location: Macedon, NY

This unique trail located 25 minutes southeast of Rochester is considered a “Forever Wild for Everyone Trail”. Along this accessible, stone dust trail there are numerous things to look at including informational signs about birds and butterflies, gardens, fairy houses, benches, painted rocks, and some old relics and info about the history of the Erie Canal. There is also a short storybook walk. The entire trail including the loop and going out to the point is about a half mile. In the summer, there are numerous flowers and we saw 6 species of butterfly during our visit! A neat feature about this park is that you can see all three versions of the Erie Canal side by side: the original canal (called Clinton’s Ditch), the enlarged Erie Canal, and the present-day Erie Canal. Leashed dogs are allowed. There was a porta potty when we visited, as well as a simple swing set, balance beam, and spinning seat. You can also walk over and see Lock 30 with some informational signs.

⚠️ NOTE: Part of the path runs along the canal with no fence or barrier.
