Genesee Country Village & Museum – Historic Village

Location: Mumford, NY

GCV&M is located 30 minutes west of Rochester, NY. It is the largest living history museum in New York State spanning 600 acres. The village and museum offer an immersive experience of 19th-century American life. It features 68 relocated and restored buildings from the Genesee Valley region, representing three time periods: Pioneer Settlement (1795–1830), Center Village (1830–1870), Gas Light District (1860–1900).

It’s so fun to walk around the historic village. Most of the buildings are open to look in or walk around. Some buildings have costumed interpreters demonstrating traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, pottery, and quilting, as well as participate in activities like 19th-century games and cooking. My kids love the shop that sells real sweets to eat. We also saw a baseball game being played while we visited in May. There are really fun special events at different times in the year and the gardens are beautiful in spring and summer.

The paths are gravel and stroller friendly, however “due to hazards posed by narrow doorways in emergency situations please leave non-essential strollers and wagons outside of the historic buildings.”

“Service dogs are welcome on the grounds of the Historic Village and on all museum tours. However, pets are not generally permitted on site – with the exception of Summer Sunset Series Concerts.”
