Onanda Park – Uplands Trail

Location: Canandaigua, NY

This park is located 45 minutes south of Rochester, NY. The trail started out as wood chips with a bit of an incline. There is a small lookout point about a quarter mile into the hike with two Adirondack chairs where you can see bits of Canandaigua Lake in the distance and some of the park cabins. Eventually the path changed to dirt with roots. We did the full loop counterclockwise up to the hemlock overlook followed by the waterfall overlook. The view of the waterfall way down below was a bit obstructed and far away, but it was still really beautiful, with a slight glimpse of the lake through the trees as well. There was a lovely wooden lookout platform with benches and it was very peaceful. There were some steep dropoffs along the side of the trail and we saw a ton of millipedes! The end of the trail seemed to go down the grassy hill between the cabins to the road – not sure if this was the correct way to go, but I didn’t see a path! The entire loop was about 1.7 miles and ~300 feet of elevation gain. The trails are not stroller friendly. Leashed dogs are allowed. The map says there is a playground and restrooms, we did not see the restroom and the playground was roped off when we visited.

If you drive across the road, you can find the lakefront area of the Onanda Park with a playground, restrooms, picnic areas, and dock.
