Location: Penfield, NY
This former golf course is now a hiking and walking area as well as located 10 minutes east of Rochester, NY. There are a few different areas of this large park.
- Recreation Area: There is a brand new recreation area in the northeast corner of the park. The parking lot is located on Whalen Road, just south of Atlantic Ave. At this location, there are two new inclusive fenced-in playgrounds for different age levels, pickleball courts, a picnic area, an open-air pavilion, restrooms, and flat stone dust stroller-friendly paths.
- Northern Section/Disc Golf Course: If you park at the parking lot at 600 Whalen Road, you will find the start of the disc golf course and a network of trails. The paths are mostly paved and pass by some beautiful pine tree groves, benches, and the disc golf course. There is a tiny creek and ponds as well. The trails can be made into a loop (see the AllTrails link below). These trails can also be accessed from the recreation area described above). There are some beautiful meadows wild wildflowers and butterflies in the summer!
- Southern Section: To reach the southern section of Shadow Pines, you can park at the same parking lot as above (600 Whalen Road) and then head south, crossing Clark Rd at the cross walk, and continuing along the trails. There are some paved paths on this side but also some non-paved paths and some hills, and at least one bench. I have not walked this entire section yet so I cannot provide a lot of details at this time, but it looks like the trail passes Hipp Brook and possibly some small ponds.
